Epithelium is one of the four basic tissue types found in animal bodies, alongside connective, muscle, and nervous tissue. It is a sheet of tightly packed cells that covers body surfaces, lines cavities and organs, and forms glands. In simple terms, it is the body's protective and functional covering in many places.

This tissue does many important jobs. It protects against wear, chemicals, germs, and water loss. It absorbs nutrients in the intestines, helps with filtration in the kidneys, releases substances such as mucus, enzymes, and some hormones, and can also play a role in sensing the environment.

There are several main types of epithelium, usually classified by cell shape and by how many layers there are. Squamous cells are flat, cuboidal cells are roughly cube-shaped, and columnar cells are tall. A simple epithelium has one layer, while a stratified epithelium has multiple layers. For example:

• Simple squamous epithelium: Found in the lungs, where its thinness allows for efficient gas exchange.
• Stratified squamous epithelium: Forms the outer layer of your skin, providing a tough barrier against wear and tear.
• Columnar epithelium with cilia: Lines the respiratory tract, helping to move mucus and debris out of your lungs.

Because it lines so many vital areas, epithelial dysfunction is linked to a wide range of diseases, including cancer (most cancers, known as carcinomas, originate in epithelial cells), autoimmune disorders, and infections. Doctors often examine epithelial tissue samples—through biopsies or other diagnostic methods—to identify these conditions.

So, while you might not think about epithelium every day, it is the unsung hero working tirelessly to protect, regulate, and maintain your body's internal environment!
