Imagine your windpipe as a highway for air, and the epiglottis as a little flap that keeps food from going down the wrong way. Epiglottitis is when that flap gets swollen and inflamed, usually because of an infection. This swelling can block airflow and make it very hard to breathe. It used to be much more common in children, but thanks to the Hib vaccine, cases have dropped a lot. Now it is seen more often in adults.
Think of it like this: if your airway is a doorway, epiglottitis can slam that door almost shut. That is why it needs immediate medical attention, often with emergency care and sometimes a breathing tube to keep the airway open. It is not something to ignore. Symptoms include a severe sore throat, trouble swallowing, drooling, and a muffled voice.
Epiglottitis is a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by inflammation of the epiglottis – a leaf-shaped flap of cartilage located at the base of the tongue that covers the windpipe (trachea) during swallowing. Its primary function is to prevent food and liquids from entering the airway. When inflamed, the epiglottis can swell enough to obstruct breathing, making it a medical emergency.
Historically, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) was the most common cause of epiglottitis, particularly in children aged 2–7 years. However, widespread vaccination against Hib has significantly reduced its incidence in this age group. Today, epiglottitis is more frequently seen in adults and is often caused by other bacterial or viral infections.
Symptoms develop rapidly and can include a severe sore throat, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), drooling, a muffled voice, stridor (a high-pitched whistling sound during breathing), difficulty lying flat, and anxiety. Because of the risk of complete airway obstruction, individuals with suspected epiglottitis require immediate medical evaluation – usually in an emergency room setting.
Treatment typically involves antibiotics to combat infection, as well as measures to ensure a clear airway, such as oxygen therapy or intubation (inserting a breathing tube). In severe cases, a tracheostomy (creating a surgical opening in the trachea) may be necessary. While once a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality, epiglottitis is now much rarer thanks to preventative vaccination, but remains a serious condition requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment.
