Envy is the feeling of wanting another person's advantages, possessions, or qualities, often with some resentment because they have them and you do not. It is both a noun and a verb. As a noun, it names the feeling itself: "His success filled them with envy." As a verb, it means to want what another person has: "I envy her confidence." You can feel this way about money, beauty, skill, happiness, freedom, or almost any kind of good fortune.

It is often confused with jealousy, but the two are not exactly the same. Jealousy is usually tied to the fear of losing something you already have, while envy is centered on someone else's advantage. In everyday life, the line is not always strict, and many people use the words loosely, but this is the usual difference.

The word often appears in stories about human weakness because it can damage friendships and peace of mind. It may show up in small ways, like bitter comments or cold silence, or in stronger ways, like gossip and attempts to pull someone down. At the same time, noticing this feeling can teach you something about what you value.
