"Endogenously" describes a process or variable that originates from within a system, rather than being caused by factors outside of it. It's a technical term often used in fields like economics, biology, and political science to emphasize internal drivers of change.

The word comes from the Greek roots endo- (meaning "within") and genes (meaning "origin"). So, literally, it means "originating within." This is important because many traditional models assume certain factors are exogenous—meaning they come from outside the system and are simply "given."

For example, in older economic models, technological progress was often treated as exogenous, something that just happened independently of the market. But "endogenous growth theory" argues that innovation and technological change are actually driven by internal factors, such as research and development investment within the economy itself. This means the economy isn't simply reacting to outside forces; it is also generating growth from within.

In biology, a process might be endogenously regulated—meaning it's controlled by internal mechanisms within an organism, such as a circadian rhythm, rather than by external stimuli like light levels. In political science, you might say that public opinion is endogenously shaped by the internal dynamics of media coverage and social interactions. Essentially, when something happens "endogenously," the explanation for why it happened lies within the system itself—a self-contained process of internal cause and effect.
