Endnotes are explanatory notes placed at the end of a document—typically a book, article, or research paper—rather than at the bottom of each page like footnotes. They serve several purposes: providing additional information, clarifying points made in the text, offering sources for claims and quotations, or even adding commentary that doesn't quite fit within the main flow of the writing.

While both endnotes and footnotes add extra detail, their placement creates a different reading experience. Footnotes interrupt the visual flow less for some because they are immediately available, while endnotes keep the main pages clean and uncluttered, though they require the reader to flip to the back of the document. This makes endnotes particularly well-suited for longer explanations or information that isn't crucial to understanding the immediate text.

Academics and researchers rely heavily on endnotes (and footnotes) to properly cite their sources and avoid plagiarism. They show intellectual honesty and allow readers to verify the information presented. However, creative writers sometimes use endnotes in a more playful way—perhaps to offer alternative interpretations of events or share behind-the-scenes details about the writing process.

For example: "The author included an endnote explaining that the character of Old Man Hemlock was inspired by a particularly grumpy neighbor." Or, "Her research paper contained over fifty endnotes documenting every source she consulted."

So, whether used for scholarly rigor or creative flair, endnotes are valuable tools for adding depth and context to written work—little treasures hidden at the back, waiting to be discovered.
