Encephalitis refers to the acute inflammation of the brain, and occasionally the surrounding tissues. The word is derived from Greek roots: en- meaning "within," kephalē meaning "head" (referring to the brain), and -itis, the standard medical suffix indicating inflammation. It is generally not a standalone illness but rather a clinical condition triggered by various infectious agents—most commonly viruses like herpes simplex, West Nile, or even certain childhood infections. In some cases, it can also be caused by the body's own immune system attacking brain tissue.

The symptoms of encephalitis vary widely based on the severity and specific location of the inflammation. Mild cases might mimic the flu, presenting with a fever, headache, and fatigue. Historically, encephalitis outbreaks have been linked to specific regional viruses, such as Japanese encephalitis in Asia or St. Louis encephalitis in North America. While modern medicine is better equipped to diagnose and treat these infections, early detection remains crucial for minimizing long-term neurological damage.
