An embolism is the obstruction of a blood vessel by an embolus—the traveling blockage itself. Think of it like this: your body has a complex system of pipes (blood vessels) delivering essential supplies (oxygenated blood) to all its parts. An embolus is a piece of debris that breaks loose and travels through those pipes until it reaches a passage too narrow to pass through, creating a dam and stopping the flow.

The most common type of embolus is a blood clot, often originating in the deep veins of the legs or the heart before traveling elsewhere. However, an embolus can also consist of air bubbles (sometimes introduced during surgery), fat droplets (following a major bone fracture), or even clumps of bacteria.

Where the embolus finally lodges determines the type of embolism and its severity. A pulmonary embolism occurs when the blockage reaches the lungs, causing shortness of breath, chest pain, and potentially life-threatening complications. A cerebral embolism affects the brain and can lead to immediate stroke symptoms, such as sudden weakness, speech difficulties, or vision loss. A coronary embolism blocks an artery supplying the heart muscle and can cause a heart attack, though this is less common than other causes of heart attack.

Doctors diagnose embolisms using advanced imaging tests like CT scans or ultrasounds. Treatment typically involves medications to dissolve clots (thrombolytics), blood thinners to prevent new ones from forming, or surgical procedures to physically remove the blockage. Prevention is key: staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding prolonged immobility are all crucial steps in reducing the risk of a life-threatening embolism.
