The word "elver" refers to a young eel, especially the stage when it has reached the coast and begins entering rivers and estuaries. It is most often used for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and the American eel (Anguilla rostrata). These are not just any baby fish. They are part of a remarkable life cycle shaped by long-distance travel. Their journey begins in the remote Sargasso Sea, where they hatch and drift across the ocean as leaf-shaped larvae. Later they change into "glass eels," almost completely transparent young eels that arrive near shore.

As they move into estuaries and start swimming upstream, they gradually gain color and become a little stronger in form; at this point they are commonly called elvers. This movement, known as an "elver run," can be a striking natural event. Their survival matters greatly, because it affects how many eels will live to adulthood and one day return to the sea to breed.

Historically, elvers have also been valued as food. In Spain, for example, very young eels are known as angulas and are considered a delicacy. In East Asia, young eels have also been caught to supply eel farming, since eels are difficult to breed in captivity. But because eel populations have fallen from overfishing, habitat loss, and other pressures, this trade is now tightly regulated in many places. When you hear the word "elver," think of a tiny traveler at the start of its long move from the sea into inland waters.
