Beyond the definition
The ecu was an old French coin that became well known in Europe for a long time. Its name comes from the French word for "shield," because early versions showed a shield or coat of arms. It first appeared as a gold coin, and later there were silver versions too. Because people trusted its value, it was important in trade and large payments. Much later, the name came back in a different form: the European Currency Unit, or ECU, a shared accounting unit that helped lead to the euro.
The ecu (French écu, roughly pronounced ay-KYOO) has a long history going back to the 13th century. It was first issued in France in 1266 under King Louis IX and became one of the best-known gold coins in Europe. Because it had a trusted value and recognizable design, it was accepted far beyond France's borders. Merchants in many countries used the ecu in major trade because it gave them a more reliable standard for payment.
Over the centuries, the ecu changed form and appeared in several gold and silver versions, including the famous écu au soleil ("sun ecu"). It was used for important transactions and also became a useful unit of account, meaning a standard for recording value even when no coin was physically exchanged. In historical writing, the word may refer either to a real coin or to a money value used in records.
The name took on a modern role in 1979 with the European Currency Unit, or ECU. This was not a physical coin but a shared accounting unit used by the European Economic Community. The choice of name pointed back to the older French coin and its link with cross-border trade. The ECU was later replaced by the euro in 1999. Because of that, you may still see ecu in two main settings: discussions of old French money and discussions of the European monetary system before the euro.
