It is a catchy melody or rhythm that gets stuck in your mind, sometimes for hours, days, or even weeks. The term comes from the German word Ohrwurm, which gives a vivid picture of a tune getting into your ear and refusing to leave.

An earworm—technically known as involuntary musical imagery (INMI)—is that frustratingly catchy tune that replays endlessly in your mind. It's not just remembering a song; it's experiencing it internally, almost like a mental loop. These sonic stowaways are often short, simple melodies with unexpected twists or repetitive elements that make them particularly "sticky."

The phenomenon isn't limited to pop songs. Jingles from commercials, theme tunes from TV shows, and even snippets of classical music can become earworms. Some people are more susceptible than others, and factors like stress, boredom, or recent musical exposure can increase the likelihood of getting one stuck.

While often a minor annoyance, researchers have begun studying earworms to understand how our brains process and store music. Interestingly, completing the song (listening to it fully) or engaging in a distracting activity—like solving a word puzzle—can sometimes help dislodge an earworm.
