dugong

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /djˈuːɡɒŋ/

US

  • /ˈduɡɑŋ/noun

Description

Imagine a large, calm sea animal moving slowly through warm, shallow water. That's a dugong, a plant-eating marine mammal often called a "sea cow." These gentle animals live in coastal waters in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They use their sensitive snouts to search seagrass beds for food. Sadly, they are vulnerable because of habitat loss, boat strikes, and accidental entanglement in fishing gear. Seeing one is special and can remind us how much life is hidden beneath the waves.
