They are especially important for dealing with reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can act like molecular "bulls in a china shop" if left unchecked. Think of a dismutase as part of the cell’s cleanup system that prevents damage and keeps things running smoothly. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is the best-known example; it tackles the particularly reactive superoxide radical, a common byproduct of energy production, turning it into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide.
