Disgorgement is a fascinating word with roots stretching back to the idea of forcefully emptying something – think of a bird regurgitating food for its young. While it can literally mean vomiting or ejecting matter (like "The whale disgorged a large amount of plastic"), it's most frequently encountered in legal and financial contexts.

In these settings, disgorgement refers to the act of giving up something – typically profits or benefits obtained illegally or unfairly. It's often described as a way to strip away any advantage gained through improper conduct (even if, to the person paying, it feels a lot like punishment). A court might order "disgorgement of profits" from a company that engaged in insider trading, requiring them to surrender the money they made through illegal means.

The key is that disgorgement aims to restore fairness by preventing someone from profiting from their wrongdoing. It's about restoring the balance by taking away what they shouldn't have had in the first place. You might see it used in cases of fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, or other situations where someone has unfairly benefited at another's expense. Sometimes the money is returned to the people who were harmed; other times it's paid over as ordered by the court or regulator.

Disgorgement also has a very literal, specialized use in sparkling wine: it's the step where the plug of frozen sediment (dead yeast) is removed from the bottle before it's topped up and corked.

So, while the image of forceful ejection might be a bit unsettling, remember that in everyday modern usage, disgorgement usually points to one of two ideas: something being forced out, or unfair profits being forced back.
