The word "disaster" comes from the Italian disastro, meaning "ill-starred"—literally, being under a bad star! This hints at the ancient belief that misfortune was linked to unfavorable astrological events. Today, we use disaster to describe any terrible event—or chain of events—that causes significant damage, loss, or suffering.

Disasters can be natural, like earthquakes, floods, wildfires, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. They can also be human-caused, such as industrial accidents, plane crashes, wars, or even large-scale failures of infrastructure. Increasingly, we talk about environmental disasters caused by pollution or climate change.

In a strict sense, the scale of a disaster is important: a true disaster usually affects many people and has long-lasting consequences. While a broken vase might be upsetting, it wouldn't typically be called a disaster. But in everyday speech, people also use the word for personal setbacks or any situation that goes badly.

You'll often hear "disaster" used in phrases like "natural disaster," "humanitarian disaster," or "economic disaster." It can also be used figuratively to describe a complete failure: "The party was a disaster!" Additionally, you can use the adverb form, disastrously, to describe an action with terrible consequences, such as when someone "disastrously misjudges" a situation.

So, whether it's a force of nature, a human error, or simply an incredibly bad outcome, a disaster is a moment when things go terribly wrong—bringing serious harm, chaos, or a complete breakdown of plans.
