Diplotene is a specific stage within prophase I of meiosis—a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes by half to form sex cells (gametes) like sperm and eggs. Meiosis is essential for sexual reproduction and helps create genetic diversity in offspring. During diplotene (also called diplonema), homologous chromosomes (matching pairs inherited from each parent) begin to separate after pairing tightly in earlier stages (especially pachytene). The protein scaffold that held them closely aligned breaks down, so the pair starts to pull apart, but the chromosomes are not fully detached. They remain connected at visible structures called chiasmata, which mark where crossing over (exchange of DNA between the pair) has occurred.

This exchange of genetic information is hugely important for creating variation in offspring. The chiasmata hold the homologous chromosomes together until later stages of meiosis, ensuring they are properly segregated into daughter cells.

Diplotene can be brief in many cells, but it can also last a very long time in some animals—especially in immature egg cells, which may pause in a diplotene-like state (often called the dictyate stage) until ovulation. You’ll primarily encounter “diplotene” in scientific writing about genetics, cell biology, and reproduction—for example, when researchers measure recombination or compare how long meiosis pauses in different species. A paper might state: "The prolonged diplotene stage observed in this species suggests a high degree of genetic recombination." It’s not a word you’d use in everyday conversation.
