During diplotene (also called diplonema), homologous chromosomes (matching pairs inherited from each parent) begin to separate after pairing tightly in earlier stages (especially pachytene). They remain connected at visible structures called chiasmata, which mark where crossing over (exchange of DNA between the pair) has occurred.

Diplotene can be brief in many cells, but it can also last a very long time in some animals—especially in immature egg cells, which may pause in a diplotene-like state (often called the dictyate stage) until ovulation.
