diplomate

A diplomate is a person who has been recognized by a professional board as having met a high standard in a specialty—usually by completing required training and passing certification exams. It's primarily used in the United States to describe professionals who have achieved board certification in their field.

In medicine, this word is especially common. When a doctor says, "I'm a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology," it means they've completed medical school, residency training, and then passed comprehensive board exams in that specialty. It's a mark of expertise beyond basic medical licensing.

But diplomate isn't limited to medicine. You might encounter it in other fields too: "She's a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners," or "He earned his status as a diplomate in clinical psychology."

It's important not to confuse diplomate with diplomat. A diplomat works in international relations between nations. A diplomate has earned professional credentials through examination. They look similar (and both connect to the idea of an official document, a "diploma"), but their modern meanings are quite different.

Less commonly, especially in older or formal writing, diplomate can mean simply a holder of a diploma or certificate. In modern everyday English, though, the board-certification sense is the one you're most likely to meet.

So when you see "diplomate," think certification, credentials, and specialized professional achievement. It's someone who has demonstrated mastery in their field through formal examination and board approval.
