The word dextral isn't something you'll hear in everyday conversation very often, but it holds a fascinating place in specialized fields. It stems from the Latin "dexter," meaning "right" or "skillful," and refers to anything pertaining to the right hand or side. While we commonly use terms like "right-handed" to describe someone's dominant hand, dextral is often preferred by scientists studying handedness—a trait called laterality.

Consider an archaeologist examining ancient stone tools. They might analyze wear patterns to determine if the toolmaker was dextral or left-handed (the opposite being "sinistral," from the Latin for "left"). Biologists also use dextral to describe how a snail shell coils: if you hold the shell with the tip pointing up and the opening facing you, a dextral shell has its opening on the right (a sinistral shell is the mirror image).

The term isn't limited to just humans or animals; it can also describe right-leaning patterns in nature. Botanists may use dextral for plants that twine in a rightward direction. Even in chemistry, certain molecules are described as being dextrorotatory, meaning they rotate plane-polarized light to the right (clockwise from the observer's point of view).
