Description

A detective isn't just someone wearing a trench coat and carrying a magnifying glass (though sometimes they are!). In everyday English, a detective is a person—often a police officer or a private investigator—whose job is to find out what happened in a crime or other puzzling situation. Think of Sherlock Holmes carefully piecing together clues. We also use the word more loosely: a scientist researching a new disease can feel like a detective too. The word comes from the Latin detegere, which literally means "to uncover" or "to expose."

You might call a private investigator a detective when they're hired to solve a crime or find a missing person, and police departments have detectives who focus on investigating serious cases. But you can even be a "detective" in your own life, trying to figure out why a situation went wrong or what is bothering a friend. A good detective is observant, logical, and persistent—always following the trail until they reach the answer.
