Defenestration is the act of throwing someone or something out of a window. The term is derived from the Latin de- ("from" or "down from") and fenestra ("window"). While it may seem bizarre to have such a specific word, defenestration has a surprisingly rich history, particularly connected to events in Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic).

The most famous instances are the "Defenestrations of Prague." While there have been several such events, the incident in 1618 is the most renowned. In that year, Protestant nobles threw two Catholic imperial governors and their secretary out of the windows of Prague Castle—an act that sparked the Thirty Years' War. In 1948, the death of diplomat Jan Masaryk after falling from a window has also been linked to this term in public discussion, though the details remain disputed. These events were rarely random acts of violence; they were deliberate political statements meant to demonstrate a total rejection of authority.

Today, defenestration is rarely used literally outside of historical contexts. It is more commonly used figuratively to describe the forceful removal or rejection of something—an idea, a policy, or even a person from a position of power. For example: "The new CEO's radical ideas led to his swift defenestration from the company."

However, it is important to remember its original meaning. While you might say someone "fell from grace," if they were physically thrown out a window, that is definitely defenestration! Though uncommon in everyday conversation, it remains a fascinating word with a dramatic past and a very specific definition.
