During cell division, DNA is packed incredibly tightly to stay organized; however, for the cell to actually "read" its genetic instructions, that DNA must undergo decondensation to become accessible. Beyond biology, the term can also appear in physics and cosmology. It describes matter shifting from an ultra-dense state to a more spread-out one. For instance, some models of the early universe talk about particles “decondensing” as the cosmos expanded and cooled after the Big Bang. While the transition from liquid to gas is technically the physical reverse of condensation, we usually call that process "evaporation" or "vaporization."
