Declawing, formally known as onychectomy, is a surgical procedure in which the last bone of each toe (the distal phalanx) is amputated to permanently remove an animal's claws. While it is most commonly performed on cats, it can technically be done to other animals, though it is far less frequent.

The term "declaw" can be misleading; it isn't just removing the keratin claw itself. The surgery involves cutting through bone, tendons, and ligaments—similar to amputating the tip of a human finger at the first knuckle. This can cause significant pain and may lead to infection, arthritis, and behavior changes such as biting or litter box avoidance. Historically, declawing was presented as a standard solution for preventing furniture damage. However, many veterinarians and animal welfare groups now discourage it and recommend alternatives like scratching posts, nail caps, and positive reinforcement training.

The legality of the procedure varies widely, as it is banned in many countries (including the UK and many European countries) and is restricted or being phased out in parts of the United States. Beyond the veterinary context, the word is often used metaphorically. To "declaw" a piece of legislation, a law, or an opponent means to strip it of its power or its ability to be effective. Just as a cat without claws cannot defend itself, a "declawed" policy is one that has been rendered harmless or "toothless."
