The dace (rhymes with "face") is a small, silvery freshwater fish. The name is used for a few different species, most of them in the cyprinid family (the same broad family as carp and goldfish). In Europe, “dace” often refers to the common dace, found widely in rivers and streams. In North America, the word is also used as a shared name for several small, minnow-like fish that live in similar habitats.

Dace are usually modest in size—often a few inches to around a foot long, depending on the species and the conditions. They can live in fast-flowing rivers, gentler streams, and sometimes canals or lakes, especially where the water has enough oxygen. They tend to feed on small insects and other tiny water life, and they may also nibble plant material.

People don’t usually think of dace as a food fish today, but they do show up in fishing. They’re sometimes used as live bait by anglers targeting larger fish. In nature, they matter because they are a key link in the food chain: they eat small water creatures, and in turn they are eaten by larger fish, birds, and mammals. Healthy populations are often found in cleaner, well-oxygenated water, so seeing them can be a sign that a stream is in decent shape.

The word “dace” has been used in English for centuries, and it suits the fish well: they often look like quick silver darts in the water. So next time you're near a clear stream, keep an eye out for that shimmering flicker—there may be dace nearby, doing their small but important job in freshwater life.
