The word "cystic" comes from the Greek word kystis, meaning bladder or sac. Today, it acts as an adjective describing something containing or relating to cysts – abnormal, closed pouches filled with fluid, air, or other substances. These aren't necessarily dangerous on their own, but they can cause complications depending on their size, location, and what is inside them.

You'll most often encounter "cystic" in medical terminology. Perhaps the most well-known example is cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder affecting the lungs and digestive system. While the lung symptoms are the best-known, the name itself comes from the way the disease causes the pancreas to become "cystic" (forming fluid-filled sacs and scarred tissue).

The word appears in many other health contexts as well. "Cystic acne" refers to severe breakouts where inflamed bumps deep under the skin form painful, pus-filled pockets. Doctors might also discuss polycystic ovaries (a key feature of polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS), or "renal cystic disease," where the kidneys contain multiple sacs.

While usually associated with specific diseases, the term can simply describe a physical finding. A radiologist might report a "cystic lesion" on an ultrasound, indicating they've found a fluid-filled structure that needs further investigation.

So, whenever you hear "cystic," think of enclosed pockets. It is a word that signals the presence of these unique structures and almost always points to something happening within the realm of biology or medicine.
