Custody refers to the legal right to care for a person or object and the authority to make decisions regarding their upbringing or preservation. It is a complex concept most deeply rooted in family law, arising during separations or divorces. In these cases, courts determine arrangements based on the best interests of the child. Legal custody involves the right to make major decisions (education, healthcare, religion), while physical custody refers to where the child actually lives. Both can be categorized as sole (one parent) or joint (shared).

Beyond the family home, "custody" is a pillar of the justice system. When a person is taken into police custody, they are deprived of their liberty and placed under the control of law enforcement. Similarly, a prison has custody of its inmates, meaning it is legally responsible for their housing and safety.

On a more literal level, the term applies to the physical possession and protection of valuable items. A museum may have "custody" of rare artifacts, or a lawyer might have "custody" of a client's original will. In criminal cases, lawyers and police also talk about the chain of custody—the documented path showing who handled a piece of evidence and when. Even in everyday life, if you are holding a friend's passport for them, it is "in your custody." While "custody battles" on the news usually highlight emotional legal fights over children, the term ultimately covers any situation where one party is legally charged with the care and control of another person or a significant object.
