Curettage is a medical procedure involving the removal of tissue from a body cavity or surface using a curette—a spoon-shaped instrument designed for scraping or cleaning. The term comes from French, built on curette (a small scraping tool). While the idea of scraping might sound a bit rough, it is actually a precise and controlled process used across various medical fields.

The most well-known use of curettage is likely within gynecological procedures, specifically dilation and curettage (D&C). This is commonly performed after a miscarriage to remove remaining tissue from the uterus or to diagnose the cause of abnormal bleeding. However, curettage isn't limited to gynecology.

Doctors also perform curettage in dermatology to remove skin growths such as warts, and it may be part of treatment for some superficial skin cancers (often combined with other methods). In dentistry and gum care, curettes are used to scrape away diseased tissue or deposits during periodontal treatment. In orthopedics, surgeons may curette bone cysts or certain benign tumors to remove abnormal tissue from inside the bone.

The purpose of curettage varies: sometimes it's diagnostic—taking a tissue sample for testing; other times it's therapeutic—removing diseased or unwanted tissue to promote healing. It can be performed in a doctor's office, clinic, or hospital setting, depending on the complexity and location of the procedure.

So, while the word might sound intimidating, curettage is simply a specialized scraping technique used by doctors to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions—from routine evaluations and cleanups to more serious medical concerns.
