The word "crosswise" describes something positioned, oriented, or moving in a direction perpendicular to a main axis or line. It essentially means "across" or "sideways." While seemingly simple, its usage can be surprisingly versatile.

You'll often encounter it describing the physical arrangement of objects. A fallen tree branch lying crosswise over a road creates an obstacle. Carpenters might cut wood crosswise to the grain for specific purposes. A river flowing crosswise through a valley changes its landscape. It is fundamentally about direction and how objects relate to one another spatially.

You'll also see it used with everyday orientation: someone lying crosswise on a bed is lying across it, not along its length. And in sewing and textiles, cutting or pulling fabric crosswise means across the width (as opposed to lengthwise).

But "crosswise" isn't limited to physical descriptions. Especially in informal or older usage, it can describe behavior and attitude. To say someone is acting "crosswise" suggests they are being contrary, stubborn, or difficult—refusing to cooperate or follow the expected path. In a story, a character might be said to look at someone crosswise, meaning with disapproval or suspicion.
