Cribbage is a classic card game for two (or more) players that combines elements of hand formation and strategic card play. It is distinct because of the "crib," a secondary hand belonging to the dealer that is built from the discards of all players. This adds a layer of strategy: do you keep your best cards or "salt" the crib with points for yourself (if you're the dealer) or deny points to your opponent?

In the common two-player game, each player is dealt six cards and discards two into the crib. (With more players, the deal and discards change a bit.) The remaining four-card hands are used during the "play" phase, where players take turns laying down cards while keeping a running total and trying to reach 31 without going over. During this phase, points are awarded for hitting a total of 15, for reaching 31 (or being the last to play), and for forming pairs or runs.

After the play, the hands and the crib are scored based on combinations like pairs, runs, and "fifteens" (any combination of cards totaling 15). A distinctive feature of Cribbage is the scoring board—a track with pegs used to record points in real-time. The first player to reach the end of the track (usually 121 points) wins the game.

Cribbage has a rich history, dating back to the early 17th century and attributed to the English poet Sir John Suckling, who derived it from an earlier game called Noddy. It remains one of the most popular games in the English-speaking world, requiring a mix of mathematical skill, tactical discarding, and the occasional bit of good old-fashioned luck.
