While the pulp has a strong, musky odor when the pod is first cracked—leading to the colorful local name "stinking toe"—it is high in starch and protein, and is eaten raw, mixed into beverages, or used in baking.
Beyond its fruit, the tree is a powerhouse of utility. Its wood is legendary for its hardness and shock resistance; in the modern flooring and furniture industry, it is often marketed as "Brazilian cherry."
