counter

B1
verbnounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /kˈaʊntə/

US

  • /ˈkaʊntər/

Description

A counter can be many things! Most often, it is the long, flat surface in a kitchen, or the place in a café or store where you order and pay. But "counter" can also point to something that goes against something else—like giving a counterargument in a debate. And it can be a way to keep track: a digital counter counts steps or visitors, and a Geiger counter counts radiation events to help measure radiation levels.

Think of it this way: a counter can be a place, a small piece used in a game, or an action that pushes back. If your friend claims chocolate is the best flavor, you might offer an opposing opinion in favor of vanilla. Or, if you are playing a board game, you might move your plastic counter across the board to show your position or score.
