A cornflake is a small, crispy piece of toasted corn—the kind you often find swimming in a bowl of milk for breakfast. People also use the plural, "cornflakes," to mean the cereal as a whole. It has been around for a long time and became widely known through the Kellogg brothers’ work in the late 19th century.

Most people know it as a simple breakfast staple: plain, crunchy, and easy to eat. Beyond the bowl, crushed cornflakes are also used in cooking—for example, as a crunchy coating for chicken or fish.

The humble cornflake began as an accidental discovery in 1894 by John Harvey Kellogg and his brother, Will Keith Kellogg. While experimenting with boiled wheat at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, they inadvertently discovered that stale grain, when rolled out, formed thin flakes rather than a sheet of dough. They eventually perfected this process using corn, creating a food that was intended to be part of a healthy, bland diet for their patients.

Today, a cornflake is recognized worldwide as a breakfast cereal made from processed, toasted maize. Beyond the breakfast bowl, it is a surprisingly versatile ingredient in the kitchen. Crushed cornflakes are frequently used as a crunchy coating for fried chicken or fish, and they even find their way into various dessert recipes to provide texture.

The word itself is quite literal: "corn" refers to the grain, and "flake" describes its thin, flattened shape. In a broader cultural sense, because it is so common and plain, people may mention it when they want to contrast something simple and everyday with something richer or more exciting.
