Originally, a cooper was an essential member of any community, specializing in the construction of staved vessels—containers made from individual wooden slats called "staves." These weren't just simple buckets; they were high-tech engineering for their time. A good cooper had to be precise enough to ensure a barrel was perfectly watertight without the use of glue, relying instead on the tension of metal hoops and the natural swelling of the wood. This craft was vital for global trade, as barrels were the primary way to transport everything from beer and whale oil to gunpowder and salted fish.

In older English, you may also see the phrase "to put a cooper on" a plan or a person, meaning to spoil it or block it—an old image of putting a lid on a barrel so nothing can move forward. Modern use is still mostly about the traditional trade, especially in winemaking and whiskey making, where coopers keep the old skills alive.
