contribute

B1
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /kˈɒntrɪbjˌuːt/

US

  • /kənˈtrɪbjut/

Description

To contribute means to give something—time, effort, money, or ideas—to help achieve a common goal or improve a situation. Imagine the construction of a magnificent castle; everyone must contribute their unique skills! A baker might contribute bread; a blacksmith might contribute swords; and a storyteller might contribute tales to entertain the builders.

You can contribute to a charity by donating money, contribute to a conversation with your thoughts, or contribute to a team project by completing assigned tasks. Something can also contribute to a result—for example, "Lack of sleep can contribute to stress." Sometimes, even small contributions make a big difference. If everyone contributes just a little, amazing things can happen! The word comes from the Latin contribuere, meaning "to bring together" or "to add."
