The word "condor" evokes images of immense wingspans and breathtaking aerial displays. These birds are New World vultures. While they share a similar appearance and role with the vultures found in Africa and Asia, they actually belong to a distinct lineage that evolved separately in the Americas. The Andean condor, found across South America's Andes Mountains, is one of the largest flying birds in the world by combined weight and wingspan, with a wingspan up to about 10 feet (around 3 meters). They play a vital role in their ecosystem by consuming carrion, which helps prevent the spread of disease.
