concuss

To concuss means to shake up or stun someone by causing a mild traumatic brain injury, typically from a blow to the head. It doesn't necessarily mean a complete loss of consciousness; often, it shows up as confusion, dizziness, memory problems, or headaches without fully blacking out. Think of your brain as floating in fluid inside your skull. A sudden impact can make it collide with the inside of the skull, which can lead to a concussion.

Historically, "concuss" comes from the Latin word concutere, meaning "to shake violently." While most commonly used in the context of sports injuries (such as football, hockey, or boxing), any forceful trauma to the head can cause a concussion—falling off a bike, being hit by an object, or even whiplash from a car accident.

The verb can also be used more broadly for the effect of a strong impact or blast wave on a person or even a thing: "The explosion concussed the windows," or "The shock wave concussed him." In everyday English, though, you'll most often see it tied to sports and accidents.

It's important to note that concussions can be serious and may require medical attention. You wouldn't usually say "I concussed my friend on purpose," because the term usually suggests accidental harm or the result of a hit. Instead, you might say, "He was concussed during the game," or "She suffered a concussion after falling down the stairs." Doctors will often diagnose a concussion, but they rarely concuss someone—they assess the damage after the impact.

So, if a hit or jolt makes your brain rattle and your thinking feels off afterward, you may have been concussed—and getting checked can matter for a safe recovery.
