Colorblindness, or more accurately color vision deficiency, refers to an inability or difficulty distinguishing between certain colors. It is rarely a complete blindness to all color; instead, most people with this condition see a broad range of colors but struggle to perceive specific differences—most commonly between reds and greens. Less frequently, individuals may have difficulty distinguishing between blues and yellows.

The ability to see color comes from specialized cells in our eyes called cones, which detect different wavelengths of light. Colorblindness occurs when one or more of these cone types are either missing or do not function properly. While most cases are rooted in genetics and passed down through families, the condition can also be caused by certain medical issues or even an injury to the eye.

Historically, colorblindness presented significant hurdles in professions requiring accurate color identification, such as sailors navigating by signal flags or electricians working with color-coded wires. Today, technology helps bridge this gap. There are now specialized glasses and mobile apps designed to help people with color vision deficiency identify and experience colors more accurately.

The term "colorblind" is also used metaphorically to describe a social perspective that ignores racial characteristics in an effort to treat everyone equally. While this is often intended as a way to move past prejudice, the usage is sometimes criticized; many argue that true equity requires acknowledging racial differences and the unique experiences associated with them, rather than ignoring them. Whether referring to a physiological condition or a metaphorical state of mind, "colorblind" speaks to how we perceive—and sometimes fail to perceive—the rich diversity of the world around us.
