Colonialism is a complex practice where one nation extends its sovereignty over another territory, establishing colonies and exploiting their resources, labor, and indigenous peoples. It is not simply about conquest; it is a system built on deep power imbalances, often justified by colonizers' belief in their own cultural or racial superiority. Historically, colonialism took several forms: direct political control where foreign governors ruled absolutely; settler colonialism, where large numbers of people moved to a new land to establish permanent societies (as seen in North America and Australia); and economic colonialism, where a country dominates another's economy through trade and investment.

The motivations behind colonialism were varied, often summarized as "gold, God, and glory." This included acquiring raw materials like gold, timber, or cotton; finding new markets for manufactured goods; expanding political influence; and spreading specific religious beliefs. However, these ambitions almost always came at a devastating cost to indigenous populations, who faced displacement, oppression, cultural erasure, and economic exploitation.

While most formal colonies gained independence during the decolonization movements of the 20th century, the legacy of colonialism continues to shape global politics. We see this in "post-colonial" studies that examine the lasting trauma and structural impacts on former colonies, in heated debates about reparations for historical injustices, and in modern forms of economic dominance often referred to as "neo-colonialism." The term can even be used metaphorically to describe how a dominant culture might overshadow or suppress smaller cultures within a single society. Ultimately, colonialism is more than just maps and dates; it is a story of power, resistance, and the enduring consequences of unequal relationships between nations.
