The term "colobus" refers to a group of Old World monkeys native to the forests and woodlands of Africa. These monkeys are renowned for their agility and mostly arboreal lifestyle, spending much of their life in trees. They are specially adapted for this life, with multi-chambered stomachs—similar to those of cows—that ferment tough leaves that many other primates cannot digest.

Their name is derived from the Greek word kolobos, meaning "mutilated" or "docked." Early naturalists gave them this name because, unlike most primates, colobus monkeys lack functional opposable thumbs. While a tiny vestigial bone remains beneath the skin, the absence of an external thumb allows their four long fingers to act as a perfect hook for catching branches during high-speed leaps.

There are several distinct species, generally categorized into three groups: the black-and-white colobus, the red colobus, and the olive colobus. The Guereza (or Abyssinian Colobus) is the most iconic, sporting a long, flowing white mantle of hair that contrasts sharply with its black body. They live in cohesive social groups that can range from small families to large troops, depending on the abundance of food in their habitat.

Sadly, many colobus populations are currently threatened by habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure these "leaf-eating specialists" continue to thrive.
