The word "colliculus" refers to a rounded structure resembling a small hill or swelling, most commonly found in the midbrain of vertebrates. It is derived from the Latin word for "little hill," and that image is quite accurate when looking at brain anatomy diagrams. However, it is not just any bump—colliculi are specialized processing centers that help with quick, survival-relevant reflexes.

In the human brain, these structures are arranged in two pairs.
