cola

A2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /kˈəʊlə/

US

  • /ˈkoʊlə/

Description

Most people know cola as a bubbly, sweet drink often enjoyed on a hot day or with fast food. But "cola" is not just the famous brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi. In older use, "cola" referred to the kola nut, a seed from West African trees used to flavor drinks and traditionally chewed for its caffeine.

Today, we mostly use it for the drink itself, which helps explain that familiar fizz when someone says, "I’m craving a cola" or "She prefers diet cola."
