Coeducation refers to a system of education in which students of different genders are educated together in the same institution (and often the same classroom). It represents more than just physical proximity; true coeducation aims for equal access to resources, opportunities, and the curriculum for all students regardless of gender.

Historically, most formal educational systems were segregated by sex. This was rooted in the belief that boys and girls possessed different aptitudes and required distinct training to fulfill their designated roles in society.
