Cobalt is a fascinating substance that exists as both a chemical element and a rich, intense shade of blue. (The metal itself isn’t blue; many cobalt compounds are.) Discovered in its pure form in the 18th century, its name reaches back to ancient folklore and the German word "kobold," or goblin. Medieval miners often encountered cobalt alongside troublesome arsenic compounds; when the ore failed to yield precious metals and instead released dangerous fumes, they blamed these mythical spirits for sabotaging their work!

As a metal, cobalt is hard, lustrous, and silvery-gray. It is rarely found in its pure state in nature, usually appearing in combination with other elements. This ability to form resilient bonds makes it invaluable to modern technology. Cobalt is crucial for creating "superalloys" that withstand the extreme heat of jet engines, as well as the high-performance lithium-ion batteries that power our smartphones and electric vehicles.

However, cobalt's most recognizable contribution remains its use as a pigment. "Cobalt blue"—a deep, vivid shade—has been prized for centuries in ceramics, glassmaking, and fine art. You can see its legacy in the stunning blue decorations of Dutch Delftware pottery or the intricate tilework of traditional Islamic art.

Beyond pigments and batteries, cobalt shows up in other places too: in powerful magnets, in catalysts that help chemical reactions happen more efficiently, and in specialized coatings that resist wear and corrosion. One radioactive form, cobalt-60, is used to sterilize medical equipment and in certain cancer treatments.

Interestingly, cobalt is also part of biology. It is the central atom in vitamin B12, which is vital for nerve function and the production of red blood cells. Like many useful materials, it comes with trade-offs: some cobalt compounds can be harmful in large amounts, and mining it can raise serious environmental and labor concerns. From ancient mines and legendary goblins to the cutting edge of modern technology, cobalt plays a surprisingly diverse role in our world.
