The circumference is the total distance around the outside of a circle. In other words, it’s the perimeter of a circle (and by extension, the distance around something circular). Think about a bicycle wheel—the circumference determines how far you travel with each full rotation of the tire.

While most commonly associated with geometry and math problems (like figuring out how much ribbon to wrap around a cylindrical gift box), the concept of circumference extends far beyond textbooks. Architects use it when designing circular buildings, engineers use it when manufacturing pipes or tunnels, and even mapmakers consider it when charting the boundaries of islands.

Outside of math, "circumference" is also used for measurements around the body or other objects (waist circumference, head circumference, the circumference of a tree trunk). In older or more literary writing, it can even mean the boundary or limit of something (“within the circumference of the law,” meaning within its limits).
