A chipmunk is a small, striped rodent belonging to the squirrel family. These charming creatures are native to North America, with one species living in northern Asia, and are easily recognized by their reddish-brown fur with distinctive dark stripes running down their backs and faces. They're smaller than most squirrels, typically measuring between 8–10 inches long, including their bushy tail.

Chipmunks are primarily ground dwellers, though they also climb trees skillfully. They're known for their cheek pouches – internal pockets that allow them to carry large amounts of food, like seeds, nuts, and berries, back to their burrows. This behavior is especially noticeable in the fall as they prepare for winter torpor (not a continuous deep sleep—they wake up periodically).

The word "chipmunk" originates from the Ojibwe word ajidamoonh, meaning "red squirrel." There are around 25 species of chipmunks, each adapted to its specific environment. Some live in forests, others in rocky areas, and some even venture into suburban gardens!

While generally shy around humans, chipmunks can become accustomed to people in parks or backyards. They're fascinating little animals that add a touch of wildness to our surroundings – and provide endless entertainment as they busily gather their winter stores. So next time you see a flash of stripes disappearing into the undergrowth, remember it's likely a busy chipmunk at work!
