Chemotaxis is the movement of an organism or cell in response to a chemical stimulus. The word itself comes from "chemo" (relating to chemicals) and "taxis" (directed movement), essentially meaning "movement guided by chemicals." It's more than just sensing a smell; it's about interpreting the concentration gradient of a substance – whether it's getting stronger or weaker as you move – and adjusting your direction accordingly.

Understanding this fundamental process allows for potential interventions, like designing drugs that disrupt chemotactic signals in harmful bacteria or redirecting growth cones after spinal cord injuries.
