A capstan is a vertical-axis rotating machine used to apply force to ropes, cables, or hawsers. Historically, it was a crucial piece of equipment on sailing ships and docks for tasks requiring significant pulling power—raising anchors, hoisting heavy sails, warping (moving a ship sideways by pulling on a fixed line), and even powering bilge pumps.

The classic capstan consisted of a large, cylindrical drum mounted vertically on a deck. To operate it, sailors would wrap a rope around the drum and insert long wooden poles, known as capstan bars, into slots in the "head" of the machine. By pushing these bars and walking around the capstan in a circular motion, the crew effectively turned the drum and hauled the line, creating immense mechanical advantage. This "walking the capstan" was arduous, repetitive work, sometimes accompanied by sea shanties to help the crew keep a steady rhythm.

While largely superseded by modern winches and windlasses on most vessels, the term "capstan" persists. Modern capstans are typically powered by electric or hydraulic motors but retain the same basic idea: a vertical drum that provides a powerful rotating force for hauling lines, with the line held and driven by friction rather than being stored as a spool of rope.

Beyond its nautical origins, "capstan" can be used metaphorically. It describes anything that acts as a central driving force in a continuous, heavy process. For example, you might read about "the capstan of consumer demand" or "the relentless capstan of the 24-hour news cycle." This usage highlights the idea of a central mechanism constantly turning and pulling everything else along with it.
