It’s the process of inserting a thin tube (a cannula) into a vessel, most often a vein (and sometimes an artery). Doctors and nurses do this for all sorts of reasons: to deliver fluids, medications, or, in some settings, nutrition directly into the bloodstream, and sometimes to take measurements or samples. You’ll often hear about cannulation when someone needs an IV drip in the hospital—that little plastic tube in their arm is a cannula placed by cannulation. It’s a common procedure, but it requires skill and precision to ensure it’s done safely and effectively.
Cannulation is a medical procedure involving the insertion of a cannula—a thin, flexible tube—into a blood vessel or other body cavity. While often associated with intravenous (IV) access for delivering fluids and medications, cannulation has a broader range of applications in modern medicine.
The most common type is peripheral venous cannulation, where a small-gauge cannula is inserted into a vein in the arm or hand. This allows healthcare professionals to administer medication directly into the bloodstream, provide hydration, or, when appropriate, take blood samples through the line. However, cannulation isn't limited to peripheral veins. Central venous cannulation involves inserting a catheter into larger veins near the heart (like the jugular, subclavian, or femoral veins) and is used for long-term access, administering medications that irritate smaller veins, or monitoring central venous pressure. In operating rooms and intensive care units, larger cannulas may be used for cardiopulmonary bypass or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Beyond vascular access, cannulation also applies to other procedures like arterial cannulation—inserting a cannula into an artery to continuously monitor blood pressure during critical care—and even the drainage of fluid collections (like pleural effusions) using specialized catheters inserted via cannulation techniques.
The procedure requires sterile technique, anatomical knowledge, and careful attention to detail to minimize complications such as infection, bleeding, or nerve damage. While seemingly simple, successful cannulation is a cornerstone of many medical treatments and diagnostic procedures, playing a vital role in patient care across various specialties—from emergency medicine to oncology.
