Cannibalism is more than just a gruesome act; it is a complex phenomenon with roots stretching back through prehistoric eras and across diverse cultures. At its most fundamental level, it refers to the consumption of one member of a species by another of the same species. When applied to humans, however, the motivations and contexts behind it are incredibly varied.

Historically, "survival cannibalism" has been documented during extreme starvation, as a harrowing last resort when all other food sources have been exhausted. A famous example is the Donner Party, a group of American pioneers stranded in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the winter of 1846–1847. In these tragic cases, the act is born of biological necessity rather than malice.

Beyond desperation, cannibalism has been practiced ritually. Anthropologists distinguish between "endocannibalism"—the consumption of a deceased member of one's own community to honor them or absorb their spirit—and "exocannibalism," which involves consuming parts of an enemy, often to seize their power or celebrate a victory in warfare. These practices were typically tied to complex systems of belief and tribal identity.

In modern society, cannibalism is widely condemned and typically treated as criminal—either directly or through related laws governing violence and the handling of human remains. However, the term lives on through metaphorical language. In business and technology, we often speak of "product cannibalization," where a company's new product reduces the sales or market share of its own older products. We also use the verb "cannibalize" to describe the act of stripping parts from one machine to repair another. From the desperate measures of the starving to ancient symbolic rituals, cannibalism remains a disturbing yet fascinating subject that forces us to confront the boundaries of human morality and culture.
