The word "calumet" is a French term derived from the Latin calamus, meaning "reed" or "flute." Early French explorers used this name to describe the ornate, long-stemmed pipes they encountered among the Indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley regions. However, for the tribes themselves—such as the Lakota, Cheyenne, Crow, and many others—the object is far more than just a pipe; it is a complex ceremonial instrument deeply embedded in spiritual and diplomatic traditions.

Traditionally, the bowl of the calumet is crafted from red pipestone (catlinite), a soft stone found in sacred quarries in present-day Minnesota. These bowls are often adorned with intricate carvings, while the wooden stems are decorated with eagle feathers—symbols of great honor and connection to the spirit world. The stem might also be wrapped in leather, fur, or adorned with vibrant beadwork.
