Cadmium (symbol Cd) is a soft, malleable, silver-white metal found in small amounts in the Earth's crust. In nature, it is not found in its pure metallic form; instead it is typically present with zinc and sometimes lead ores. It was identified in 1817, and its name comes from cadmia, an old term for calamine, because it was first found as an impurity in zinc ore.
Though it is relatively uncommon, cadmium has had many practical uses. One long-standing use is in nickel-cadmium (NiCd) rechargeable batteries, known for durability and high discharge rates. It is also used in electroplating, where cadmium layers help reduce corrosion on metal parts. Cadmium compounds have been important for bright, stable pigments, especially vivid yellows, oranges, and reds in paints, plastics, and ceramics. In recent decades, use has declined in many areas because of toxicity concerns, with alternatives replacing it in several applications.
However, cadmium is toxic to humans and ecosystems. Long-term exposure can damage kidneys, lungs, and bones. Because of these risks, its production, use, and disposal are heavily regulated in many countries. Cadmium is still useful in specific technical contexts, but it is a material you only use when strict safety and handling controls are in place.
