The term "Bushman" carries a complex and often sensitive history. It was used by European colonists and other outsiders to describe several distinct indigenous groups in the arid regions of Southern Africa—groups now more accurately known as the San peoples. Communities such as the Ju/'hoansi, !Kung, and Khwe traditionally lived nomadically, following seasonal resources and depending on intimate ancestral knowledge of the land.

They are celebrated for their extraordinary skill in tracking animals, finding water in harsh environments, and shaping tools from natural materials. Their languages are notable for using "click" consonants, which are rare worldwide but distinctive within their language traditions. Historically, social life often emphasized egalitarian values, communal sharing, and a deep spiritual connection to nature.

However, "Bushman" also carries a painful legacy. Imposed by outsiders during the colonial era, it was often used to dehumanize and marginalize these communities. Many find the term pejorative because of its history of discrimination and dispossession. Today, scholars, activists, and many community members generally prefer "San" or, ideally, the specific names of individual groups.
